Dr. Reed has spent a considerable amount of time conducting biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. He received a Howard Hughes Research Fellowship and for 2 years, conducted studies in cancer research. This effort was continued in Residency where he spent an additional 2 years in the Laboratory of Head and Neck Cancer Research. Here Dr. Reed continued his biomedical research which has helped to develop an assay to detect new or recurrent cancers of the mouth and voice box using saliva samples. These studies culminated in several publications in peer-reviewed journals. Research in this area continues at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Laboratory of Head and Neck Cancer Research, David Sidransky, M.D. is the Laboratory Director.
Currently, Dr. Reed is using his Fellowship training in Neurolaryngology to establish a Voice and Swallow Disorders Center for the Colorado Neurological Institute in Englewood, Colorado, where he is a member. He will continue his emphasis on research, switching to clinically-oriented research which will target neurological etiologies of voice and swallow dysfunction.
